Job Purpose:

At Sophos our mission is to protect our customers from cybersecurity threats. The Messaging Security Group is responsible for developing Sophos Central Email and Phish Threat products. The Senior Software Engineer II (SSEII) will work within the Messaging Security Group Engineering team.  As a senior member of the engineering team, you will directly influence both system design and best practice across Sophos’ global cloud development organization. A n SSEII will work closely with other development leaders and architects across MSG and product management teams to define and execute Sophos’ vision with respect to email and messaging security.  At Sophos all engineers are part of agile teams.  The SSEII will in most cases serve as the tech lead for a scrum team


Main Duties

  • Contribute to development across the full software stack by designing and implementing product components with test coverage and automation, to deliver against project timescales, quality and requirements
  • Be involved in project planning and drive for high-value and high-quality solutions which meet business needs
    • Work with the team to analyze and understand project requirements
    • Investigate, present and recommend technical implementation designs and technologies to use in products
    • Participate in the design of products in line with asset technical strategy, quality and functionality requirements
  • Mentor more junior members of the team through pair programming and code reviews
  • Contribute to daily stand-ups, kick-offs, collaborative estimation and retrospective meetings
  • Participate in security reviews of new developments to ensure that released products comply with Sophos’ security requirements and industry best practice, including analyzing product security concerns and presenting security documentation
  • Actively contribute to code reviews to aid quality and correctness in the immediate and wider teams
  • Define test scenarios and test cases to ensure quality of the team’s deliverables
  • Other duties and responsibilities as directed


Skills & Experience

  • Experience in full stack software development using Java and JavaScript.
  • Confidence in designing, implementing and testing software systems and components
  • Applied knowledge in the many of the following technical domains:
    • Public cloud platforms (preferably AWS)
    • Email Security knowledge and experience a plus
    • Use of ML or AI engines is a plus
    • JAVA, JUnit, Spring, Java Web Services, Json, Java Spring Framework and modern JS Frameworks, Groovy
    • Angular and Javascript as well as the underlying API’s for a great user experience as well as a secure session
    • Distributed cloud system architectures & patterns
    • Object-oriented development languages (preferably Java). Ability to read code and review PRs
    • DevOps/SRE practices (CI/CD, infra as code, production monitoring)
    • Work with best of breed Cloud technologies (NoSQL, Elastic Search, high throughput event processing, cloud-scale data analytics, etc.)
    • Experience troubleshooting large scale cloud-based applications.
